There is in Philippians this very interesting passage—or really set of passages—about Paul’s own experience. He is in prison. He’s in a Roman prison. He’s been arrested and is now at what we believe to be the end of his apostolic career.
There’s every prospect—you can see this in Philippians—that he’s going to be put to death. He refers to his death in an extended section from about 1:12 and following all the way through, really, the end of chapter 1. It’s this extensive idea of the possibility of his death. And that’s when we get this very quotable verse, “To live is Christ, to die is gain.”
