Life is full of ups and downs. It’s full of backwards and forwards. It’s full of all kinds of directions.

One of the things most important to keep in mind is which direction we’re going. The book of Philippians speaks exactly to this interesting question of movement or direction.

By the time you get to chapter 3 of Philippians, Paul has reached a very climactic moment, and he speaks of one thing that he does. He uses an athletic metaphor of a runner, someone participating, perhaps, in one of the ancient games. Imagine a runner who is pressing forward toward a goal and a prize. This picture of movement—even athletic movement—is absolutely critical to the overarching theme of Philippians: pressing on.

It’s one of the things that we do as a University. Here at HBU we are always thinking about how we can make the university better within the next few months or within the next year. Or with our Ten Pillars vision, how can we make the university better over a twelve year period of time, which was started in 2008. We’re aiming towards 2020 and we’re trying to press on ourselves. It’s the movement that we want as a university towards excellence, towards deeper commitment, towards becoming the kind of university that God called us to be.
